Located outside the tiny town of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina (just over an hour by car from Charlotte), the North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval race track of just 0.625 mi (1.006 km) known for hosting NASCAR and other motorsports events. The region’s love of stock car racing is said to have emerged out of North Carolina’s illegal alcohol (“moonshine”) industry in the 1930s and 40s, which often required its “employees” to drive very fast to avoid the police! The North Wilkesboro Speedway was constructed in 1947, where it quickly became one of the top stock car race tracks in the nation, hosting NASCAR races until 1996, when it fell on hard times and closed until 2009. Several attempts were made to reopen the track with the most recent in 2022, though this time fans are hopeful that the famous little track could be open again for good. The all-time lap record is held by Justin Crider at a rapid 0:18.785. Get your tickets for 2024 auto racing events at the North Wilkesboro Speedway from TicketX today!
