Home Teams: Houston Texans (NFL)
NRG Stadium opened in 2002 as the new home of the Houston Texans, an expansion franchise that joined the NFL in 1999. At the time, NRG Stadium was the first NFL venue to feature a retractable roof, setting a trend that has now been replicated widely across the league. The building’s design has been praised for its feeling of airy openness due to the fabric construction of the roof and the expansive sections of glass that offer great views from the concourses and make the stadium glow at night when viewed from outside. While Texans fans didn’t have much to cheer about for the team’s first decade in NRG Stadium, they have watched their team grow into a regular playoff contender in the time since (still waitin’ for that first Super Bowl appearance though!). NRG Stadium has hosted the big dance twice: Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 (yep, the one with that Janet Jackson halftime show…) and Super Bowl LI in 2017. As well as regular season and playoff Texans home games, NRG Stadium features high school and NCAA college football games, rodeos (including the world famous Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo from late February to mid-March, which features nightly concerts in NRG Stadium), concerts, and international soccer matches (including home games for the USA but also occasionally Mexico, due to Texas’s proximity to the border and large Mexican immigrant population). The venue will also host several matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If you show up hungry to NRG Stadium, you won’t have far to go to find plenty of hearty snacks, with everything from juicy grilled steaks to TexMex to huge donuts on the menu (plus margaritas and craft beer). Team and event merchandise can be found on sale at numerous kiosks and shops in and around the stadium.
NRG Stadium is a sizable venue that offers many different seating options to its visitors. There is extensive premium seating in the form of club seats and luxury suites, along with several VIP lounges and bars. The rest of the stadium contains plentiful general seating, with seats to suit every preference and budget (from mid-range to cheaper prices). Fans looking for a memorably raucous experience should aim for tickets in the Bull Pen behind the north endzone, where fans tend to stand throughout the game, belting out songs and group chants to spur their team onto victory. All seats provide excellent views of the action, no matter their location.
