PayPal Park History

PayPal Park became the new home of the San Jose Earthquakes on the day it first opened in February 2015, replacing the 7000-seat college soccer stadium that the team had unfortunately been using between 2008-2014 (prior to that, the Earthquakes had played in a college football stadium). As a soccer-specific stadium with a capacity of 18,000 and a wide open roof to allow in plenty of natural light, PayPal Park was a big improvement, giving lifelong Earthquakes fans a stadium to call their own at long last. The Earthquakes are actually one of the very few (four, actually) MLS teams that (sort of) predate the MLS itself, having played in the exciting but ill-fated NASL in the 1970s and 80s. As one of the founder clubs of MLS in 1996, the Earthquakes have been with the league through thick and thin, apart from an unfortunate two year stint when they went on hiatus and nearly folded completely (2006-2007) despite having won two Supporters’ Shields and their first ever MLS Cup in the years leading up to that troubled time thanks to a dramatic 4-2 win over Chicago Fire FC. The years since have seen the team’s fortunes vary widely, with another Supporters’ Shield in 2012 followed by a four-year postseason drought. Matters hit rock bottom in 2018 when the Earthquakes finished dead last in the entire league. Still, undeterred, their ever-loyal fans keep on coming back for more, with supporters groups like the San Jose Ultras, Club Quake, Soccer Silicon Valley, The Casbah, The Faultline, and Epicentro74 generating plenty of atmosphere to get PayPal Park rocking when the Quakes are in town. Hungry visitors to PayPal Park will find no shortage of tasty snacks, with food trucks featuring everything from tacos and BBQ Kalbi to paninis and waffles. Plenty of good craft beer is also available. For San Jose Earthquakes merchandise, head to one of the venue’s many shops and kiosks.

As well as San Jose Earthquakes soccer games, PayPal Park has also hosted rugby, lacrosse, and several international soccer games featuring the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team.
