About Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is a historic venue that has served as a significant cultural and performance hall since its construction between 1922 and 1924. Designed by the renowned architect R. H. Hunt, who also crafted the lavish Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, the auditorium was established at a cost of $700,000 to honor local veterans of World War I. Situated strategically at 399 McCallie Avenue, the building is nestled between downtown Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee Chattanooga campus, making it a central figure in the city's architectural and cultural landscape. The auditorium features two theaters, with the larger one accommodating 3,866 guests and the smaller one seating 1,012, alongside a 9,600 square foot trade show convention hall located in the basement. However, by the early 1960s, the Memorial Auditorium had fallen into disrepair, leading to its closure in 1965 and again in 1988 for extensive renovations and modernizations that ultimately cost over $7 million, with its grand reopening occurring in 1991. Throughout its over 85-year history, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium has hosted an array of events, including religious festivals, political rallies, debutante galas, opera, musicals, and concerts, continuing to play a vital role in Chattanooga's cultural scene. The venue's historic concert pipe organ, dating back to its construction and restored over 21 years by the Chattanooga Music Club, was rededicated in July 2007, with ongoing efforts to ensure its use and preservation. Renovations began in February 2012 on the smaller community theater within the auditorium to address handicap accessibility issues, including replacing seating with pews, adding a concession stand, overhauling bathrooms, and improving accessibility with a new elevator. These renovations, expected to complete in 2013 and led by architect Bob Franklin, underscore the ongoing commitment to maintaining the auditorium's status as a cherished historic venue that meets modern standards.
