Home Teams: Texas Tech Red Raiders (NCAA College Basketball)
Despite its rather uninspiring name, United Supermarkets Arena is actually quite a gorgeous facility, boasting a facade done up in Spanish Renaissance style in keeping with the aesthetics of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Built in 1999, United Supermarkets Arena has been home to the Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s and women’s basketball teams and women’s volleyball team ever since. The Red Raiders men’s basketball program has long flown slightly under the radar in comparison to its football team, but has gradually emerged as a success over the decades, with 19 appearances in the NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournament spread evenly across the decades back to the 1950s. The Raiders have reached the Sweet 16 on 8 occasions and the Elite 8 on 2, with both coming in consecutive recent years in 2018 and 2019. The second tournament run, in 2019, saw the Raiders take not just one but two steps further, beating the Michigan State Spartans 61-51 to reach the NCAA championship final, where they faced the Virginia Cavaliers and fell 85-77 in a heartbreaking overtime loss. Nevertheless, the excitement that the Raiders unprecedented run to the final generated has continued in years since, drawing huge raucous crowds to their home games at United Supermarkets Arena. As well as Red Raiders basketball and volleyball games, United Supermarkets Arena has also hosted gymnastics competitions, WWE wrestling shows, and numerous large-scale concerts featuring the likes of Elton John, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and Garth Brooks. Hungry visitors to United Supermarkets Arena will find plenty of tasty snacks at the concessions, including Vinny’s Original Pizza, grilled cheeseburgers, wraps, and popcorn, along with plenty of cold beer. Those who wish to shop for Red Raiders merchandise can check out the shops and kiosks at United Supermarkets Arena or around campus.
The recent successes of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, especially their run to the 2019 NCAA championship final, have led to basketball games almost rivaling football games as the hot ticket in town (though of course football always rules in Texas). Red Raiders home games, as well as big concerts and performances at United Supermarkets Arena, often selling out months in advance.
