Detroit Pistons

Like the gritty Motor City that inspired their name, the Detroit Pistons have often garnered their image as a tough, unyielding opponent. Their infamous Bad Boys team of the 1980s, led by point guard Isaiah Thomas, stretched every rule of basketball to bruise and batter their way (twice past Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls) to three straight NBA Finals, winning back to back titles in 1989 and 1990. Apart from a purple patch in the early 2000s that brought a third title, however, in recent years, the Pistons have been stuck in the basement of the Eastern Conference. After finishing dead last in 2023-24, diehard Pistons fans will be praying that their team finally turns things around next season. You can help! Buy your tickets from TicketX and be there in Little Caesars Arena in 2024-25 to cheer the Detroit Pistons on!

Rival Teams

Nothing excites NBA basketball fans more than when their team faces off against one of their biggest rivals. Here are two of the Detroit Pistons’ most significant rivalries.

Detroit Pistons vs Chicago Bulls

The Detroit Pistonsrivalry with the Chicago Bulls will be instantly familiar to anyone who lived through the 1980s or to younger fans who relived all the drama through the The Last Dance, a recent Netflix documentary about Michael Jordan and the Bulls. Far from kowtowing to the Bulls, Isaiah Thomas and his “Bad Boys” thumped their rivals two years in a row en route to winning back to back NBA championships. The Bulls got their own back the third time and never looked back, leaving Detroit in their dust. The rivalry has never reached those heights of enmity again (they’d both be chucked out of the league these days!) but every time Detroit and Boston drive down the I-94 highway to play one another (in any sport) you know that sparks could fly! The Pistons will likely play the Bulls 4 times in the 2024-25 regular season, twice in Chicago and twice in Detroit.

Detroit Pistons vs Boston Celtics

Detroit and Boston like to beat one another at everything, from baseball to hockey to football (even soccer, more recently!). But the basketball rivalry that developed between Isaiah Thomas’s Detroit Pistons and Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics in the 1980s took this to a whole new level, with numerous brutal but enthralling playoff clashes between the teams that saw Boston win twice and Detroit emerge victorious three times (en route to three straight NBA Finals appearances and two titles). While the Celtics are now much stronger than the struggling Pistons, the boys from Boston can never take a win for granted when they come to Detroit! The Pistons will likely play the Celtics 4 times in the 2024-25 regular season, twice in Chicago and twice in Detroit.

When do the 2024-25 NBA Season and Preseason start for the Detroit Pistons?

The NBA preseason generally tips off in early October. The schedule of preseason games is usually released some time in early August. ****Like most NBA teams, the Detroit Pistons will play 3-5 preseason games at various locations to prepare for the upcoming 2024-25 NBA regular season. Fans should note that some preseason games take place in non-NBA American markets or even overseas in other countries (for example, two NBA preseason games will be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE this year). The NBA regular season starts at the end of October and runs until early April.

Why should you buy tickets to Detroit Pistons preseason games?

While preseason games do not count towards any team’s point totals in the NBA regular season, don’t completely write them off! Not only are tickets to preseason games much cheaper, but they also allow you a sneak peek at exciting new draft picks and other young players who might be key additions to the lineup of the Detroit Pistons in the upcoming season. And with tickets at cheaper prices from TicketX, premium seats are also much more affordable, giving you unbeatable views of all your favorite Detroit Pistons players close up!

2024-25 NBA Season Predictions

Which Teams Will Go To the 2024-25 NBA Playoffs?

There are 20 teams—10 from the Eastern Conference and 10 from the Western Conference—who make the NBA Playoffs. The eight No. 7-10 seeds have to face two do-or-die Play-In games to advance to the final eight in each conference. The 76ers and Heat won that honor in the East in 2024, with the Lakers and Hornets earning that reality in the West.

But with the Western Conference so competitive, Victor Wenbayama, the Spurs, and the Kings improving, and teams like the young Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves on the upswing, the days of seeing the aging Los Angeles LakersLos Angeles Clippers, and Phoenix Suns in the NBA Playoffs may be quickly approaching.

In the East in the 2024-25 NBA season, we can expect the Celtics, 76ers, Knicks, Bucks, Heat, Cavaliers, Magic, and Pacers back in the Postseason, with the Nets, Hawks, and Bulls fighting it out for the final two Play-in spots.

In the West, Anthony Edwards and the TimberwolvesChet Holmgren and the ThunderNikola Jokić and the Nuggets, and Luka Dončić and the Mavericks are bound to make the Playoffs again. As many as eight or nine teams, including the aforementioned Lakers, Clippers, Suns, Kings, Pelicans, Spurs, improving Rockets, and Steph Curry and the Warriors, are fighting for those final six spots.

Which Two Teams Will Go To the 2025 NBA Finals and Why?

There have been five different NBA champions over the last five seasons—the Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, and Denver Nuggets—and with the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers meeting in the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals and the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2024 Western Conference Finals, it means a guaranteed six different champions in six years.

Who might we see in the 2025 NBA Finals? The Celtics have the best starting five in the Eastern Conference: Kristaps Porziņģis, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Jrue Holiday. The C’s will again be the team to beat in the East, especially if Porziņģis can remain injury-free. In the West, it should be a three-team battle between OKC, Minnesota, and Denver, with the new face of the NBA, Edwards, leading his team to the promised land.

2024-25 NBA Finals Prediction: Celtics over Timberwolves, 4-3

Trade Rumors and Draft Picks

Given that they recorded one of the worst seasons in NBA history (12th worst, actually!) in 2023-24, the Detroit Pistons will definitely be looking to rejuvenate their roster with free agents, new talent from the draft, and trades with other franchises. Due to this lowly finish, the Pistons will get the 5th pick in the first round of the draft, with experts suggesting that they might select one of two French young superstars in Zaccharie Risacher or Alex Sarr. With five free agents this summer, the Pistons may look to acquire a few players through trades or free agency, with Karl-Anthony Towns (Minnesota Timberwolves), Brandon Ingram (New Orleans Pelicans ), and Patrick Williams (Chicago Bulls) all potential targets.

Little Caesars Arena hosts all Pistons and Red Wings regular season and playoff games, as well as concerts, cultural events, conferences, and other sporting competitions.
