Dinosaur Pile-Up are an English alternative rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, formed in late 2007 by vocalist, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist Matt Bigland following the dissolution of his previous band Mother Vulpine. The band's name derives from a scene in Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong — a stampede of Apatosauruses tripping over each other — which Bigland found absurd enough to name a band after. Drawing from grunge and post-grunge influences including Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Pixies, and Smashing Pumpkins, Bigland recorded their debut album Growing Pains (October 2010) entirely alone in a home studio in Bridlington, playing every instrument himself, before the settled trio — with Sheils and Cratchley — became DPU's permanent core. Nature Nurture (2013), produced by Tom Dalgety, brought wider attention; Eleven Eleven (2015) followed before a deal with Parlophone yielded Celebrity Mansions (2019), their most commercially successful release — led by the single "Thrash Metal Cassette" and named one of Loudwire's 50 best rock albums of the year. Bigland suffered near-fatal ulcerative colitis in 2021, delaying their fifth album I've Felt Better, released August 22, 2025, on Mascot Records. The band has supported A Day to Remember, Brand New, and Feeder, and performed at Download Festival and Reading and Leeds. In 2009 they were invited to tour Europe with the Pixies.
