Down are an American heavy metal supergroup from New Orleans, Louisiana, formed in 1991, consisting of vocalist Phil Anselmo (Pantera), guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), bassist Todd Strange (Crowbar), and drummer Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod). All five original members were longtime New Orleans friends who began jamming during a Pantera hiatus, circulating three-song demo tapes without identifying themselves before signing with Elektra Records after a talent scout attended a hometown show. Their debut album NOLA — an abbreviation for New Orleans, Louisiana — was released on September 19, 1995, becoming a landmark sludge metal record praised by AllMusic as "a landmark album that combines the talents of dedicated rock musicians." Blending sludge metal, doom metal, Southern rock, and Black Sabbath-inspired riffs, NOLA produced the anthems "Bury Me in Smoke," "Stone the Crow," and "Temptation's Wings." After a hiatus Rex Brown (Pantera) replaced Strange for Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow (2002) and Down III: Over the Under (2007), followed by two EPs. The current lineup features Anselmo, Keenan, Bobby Landgraf, Pat Bruders, and Jimmy Bower.
