Filter is an American industrial rock and post-grunge band formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1993 by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Richard Patrick — born Richard Michael Patrick on May 10, 1968, in Needham, Massachusetts — alongside programmer and guitarist Brian Liesegang. Patrick had previously served as a touring guitarist for Nine Inch Nails from 1989 to 1993 after meeting Trent Reznor in a Cleveland music store, departing just before The Downward Spiral's recording. Filter signed to Reprise Records and their debut album Short Bus (1995) went platinum, driven by the hit single "Hey Man Nice Shot." Their second album Title of Record (1999) also went platinum, powered by "Take a Picture." Subsequent albums include The Amalgamut (2002), Anthems for the Damned (2008), The Trouble with Angels (2010), The Sun Comes Out Tonight (2013), Crazy Eyes (2016), and The Algorithm (2024). Richard Patrick is the band's only continuous member, with the current lineup also featuring guitarist Jonny Radtke, bassist Bobby Miller, and drummer Elias Mallin.
