Minnesota Timberwolves

Despite the ferocity of their name, the Minnesota Timberwolves have lacked much serious bite on the court for the vast majority of their time in the NBA since they joined the league in 1989. In fact, by most measures the Wolves are possibly the worst active team in NBA history, having qualified for the postseason just 11 times in their 34 years of existence. 8 of those 11 playoff appearances came consecutively, however, beginning in 1997, when Wolves draft pick Kevin Garnett led the team into their first-ever postseason series, which they lost to the Houston Rockets 3-0. This relative purple patch continued until 2004, when the Wolves finally managed to win a playoff series, decided they had enjoyed doing so, and promptly won another. They lost out in the end in the Western Conference Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers 4-2, still the franchise’s best-ever achievement to date. Many difficult years followed, especially following Garnett’s departure in 2007, with the Wolves on the outside looking in come playoff time for 13 straight seasons. They finally returned to the First Round in 2018, losing to the Memphis Grizzlies 4-1, but then reverted to type, missing the playoffs in the next three seasons. Recent years have brought some hope to long-suffering Minnesota Timberwolves fans, however, as the team made First Round appearances in 2022 and 2023. No doubt those same fans are hoping that the Wolves, led by center Karl-Anthony Towns and guard Anthony Edwards, can go a few steps further in 2024.

Minnesota Timberwolves Rivalries

The simple fact that the Minnesota Timberwolves have always struggled to win games against anyone means that a cynical man might argue that their main rivalry is less with any specific team and more with the sport of basketball itself, but there are several teams with which the Wolves have developed a certain level of animus over the years. Chief among these is probably the Memphis Grizzlies, the only NBA team with a more fearsome name than the Timberwolves. The Grizz, who have also had their own struggles over the years, are one of the teams that the Wolves have a good all-time record against, though the team from Memphis did put them out of the NBA Playoffs in 2018. The Timberwolves also have divisional rivalries with the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder as well as a local regional rivalry against the Milwaukee Bucks

Are Minnesota Timberwolves basketball games exciting?

The atmosphere inside Target Center for Minnesota Timberwolves games has been criticized in the past as lacking noise and intensity (possibly influenced by the years of watching the Timberwolves get thrashed by better teams…). With improvements in the team, however, including a few runs into the NBA Playoffs, the crowd has started to respond, filling up the lower and upper tiers and raising the roof to cheer on the home team! Turns out that it does not take much to get Minnesota hoops fans going.
