The Xcel Energy Center opened in 2000 to welcome an NHL franchise back to hockey-mad Minnesota for the first time since the departure of the Minnesota North Stars to Dallas (where they are now the Dallas Stars) in 1993. The Minnesota Wild have played at the Xcel ever since, consistently drawing good crowds despite a lack of much success on the ice aside from one appearance in the Conference Finals in 2003. The Xcel Energy Center received extra funding for construction from the state of Minnesota by agreeing to host championship rounds for various Minnesota high school sports. This commitment to youth sports, particularly hockey, can be seen in the arena’s “State of Hockey” display on its concourse, which features jerseys from every high school in Minnesota! Along with all regular season and playoffs Wild games, the Xcel Energy Center also hosts college and high school sports, lacrosse games, concerts, and comedy shows. Those fans showing up on an empty stomach will find plenty to eat at the Xcel Energy Center, with everything from Korean snacks to burritos to delicious sweet malts. During NHL games, the arena also holds a Wild $6 Happy Hour that begins when the doors open and ends half an hour before puck drop, with beer, cocktails, and various snacks all priced at just $6. Those looking for team and event merchandise will find plenty of options at the venue’s many shops and kiosks.

Premium seating areas include a level of luxury suites and a club level, as well as several exclusive lounge areas. The arena also sells “On-the-Glass” seats for those fans who want to be as close as possible to the on-ice action. Getting to Xcel Energy Center (Transportation and Parking)

Visitors can access Xcel Energy Center via public transportation or driving their own vehicle. Note that Xcel Energy Center is located in St. Paul, which is part of a twin-city urban area with Minneapolis. The NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves play in nearby Target Center in Minneapolis, just a 15-minute drive across the river from the Xcel Energy Center!

Getting to Xcel Energy Center via public transportation

Public transportation in the form of several city buses or the light rail Green Line can get you to Xcel Energy Center from downtown St. Paul. Driving your own vehicle to the Xcel Energy Center is fairly straightforward, but be prepared for considerable traffic around the venue during big games and events. Does Xcel Energy Center have on-site parking?

Yes, there are two parking garages linked directly to the venue: RiverCentre Parking Ramp and Kellogg Parking Ramp. These two parking areas are generally operated on a first-come, first-served basis. For those visitors who prefer to have prepaid parking booked in advance, the Xcel Energy Center recommends using ParkWhiz to make an off-site parking reservation (ParkWhiz is not available for the on-site parking ramps).
