Ratboys are an American indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2010 by lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Julia Steiner — originally from Louisville, Kentucky — and lead guitarist Dave Sagan, who met at freshman orientation while studying at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. After graduating, Steiner moved to Chicago to join the city's vibrant indie rock community, with Sagan following after completing his architecture degree. The band relocated to Sagan's hometown in 2015 and released their debut album AOID that same year on Topshelf Records, later expanding to a quartet with the addition of bassist Sean Neumann in 2016 and drummer Marcus Nuccio in 2017. Rolling Stone named their second album GN (2017) one of the "15 Great Albums You Probably Didn't Hear in 2017," and Uproxx critic Steven Hyden listed it among the best albums of the year. Printer's Devil (2020) earned further critical acclaim, with MTV calling it "the best album of their career." Their fourth album The Window (2023) — produced by Chris Walla, formerly of Death Cab for Cutie, and recorded in Seattle — saw the band expanding their sonic palette with rototoms and talk boxes to widespread praise. Their sixth album Singin' to an Empty Chair was released on February 6, 2026, on New West Records. Their sound draws from indie rock, alt-country, jangle pop, and Midwestern punk, and they have toured with The Decemberists, PUP, Soccer Mommy, and Kim Deal.
