Smile Empty Soul is an American post-grunge and alternative rock band formed in 1998 in Santa Clarita, California, originally consisting of Sean Danielsen (vocals, guitar), Ryan Martin (bass), and Derek Gledhill (drums), who met while attending different high schools in the Santa Clarita area. After building a following through local gigs and performances on the Sunset Strip, a demo caught the attention of John Parker of ThroBack Records, which led to a deal with Lava Records. Their self-titled debut album, released on May 27, 2003 and produced by John Lewis Parker, was certified gold by the RIAA in March 2005 with sales exceeding 500,000 copies, and spawned three singles: "Bottom of a Bottle," which reached number seven on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Nowhere Kids," and "Silhouettes." Following label disputes, their second album Anxiety was shelved for years before an independent release in 2005. Subsequent albums include Vultures (2006) on Bieler Bros. Records, Consciousness (2009) on F.O.F./EMI, 3's (2012) on eOne Records, Chemicals (2013), and Oblivion (2018). After the departures of Gledhill in 2005 and Martin in 2017, Sean Danielsen has remained the sole founding member and the band's primary songwriter, frontman, and creative driving force. The band continues to record and tour, releasing Swan Song in February 2025.
