Styx, a rock band, formed in 1972 in Chicago, Illinois. They are known for power ballads, hard rock and acoustic guitars, upbeat tracks, synthesizers, acoustic piano, and even elements of musical theatre. They started as a progressive rock band and added pop and soft rock elements in the 80s. The group released an album every year in the 80s, beginning in 1972, and broke through commercially in Europe. They were known as the Tradewinds when they first formed, but changed to TW4 (There Were 4) after another group used the Trade Winds. When they got signed, they decided to choose a new name and while there were several suggestions, Styx was the only name none of them hated. From 1977 to 1981, they released four albums that all went multi-platinum and sold over 2 million copies each.
