Sudan Archives is the stage name of Brittney Denise Parks, an American violinist, singer, songwriter, and producer born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and based in Los Angeles, California. She took up violin in the fourth grade, teaching herself entirely by ear — a self-taught approach that would define her entire artistic identity. As a child she "messed around with instruments in the house" and played violin in church and school bands; her father, a label executive, briefly attempted to form a pop duo with Parks and her twin sister Cat, but Parks pursued her own artistic path. A pivotal discovery of the violin playing style of Northeast Africa — particularly Sudanese fiddling and the ethnomusicological work of Cameroonian pioneer Francis Bebey — transformed her approach to the instrument. Moving to Los Angeles at nineteen to study music technology, she gravitated to the Low End Theory club scene, where a chance encounter with Stones Throw A&R Matthewdavid led to her signing to Stones Throw Records in 2017. She began releasing music under the name Sudan Moon — a combination of her childhood nickname and idol Sailor Moon — before shortening it to Sudan Archives. Her self-titled debut EP (2017) and Sink EP (2018) established her cult following; debut full-length Athena (November 2019, Stones Throw) drew widespread critical acclaim for reimagining the Greek goddess as a powerful Black woman and introducing her vision of fusing violin, R&B, hip-hop, experimental electronics, and beat-making. Second album Natural Brown Prom Queen (September 9, 2022) was named one of the best albums of 2022 by dozens of publications; it earned her two 2023 Libera Awards for Best Breakthrough Artist/Release and Best R&B Record. Third album The BPM (October 17, 2025, Stones Throw) — blending Detroit and Chicago club sounds with themes of technology and self-exploration — received a Pitchfork score of 8.4 and an 83 Metacritic rating. She has performed at Coachella, Pitchfork Midwinter, and FORM: Arcosanti, and toured with André 3000, Caroline Polachek, and St. Vincent.
