Sugar are an American alternative rock band formed in 1992, led by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Bob Mould — born October 16, 1960, in Malone, New York — who had previously co-founded Minneapolis punk pioneers Hüsker Dü from 1979 to 1987. After two solo albums — the introspective Workbook (1989) and the heavier Black Sheets of Rain (1990) — Mould departed Virgin Records. In early 1992 he rehearsed new material in the back of a tire shop in Athens, Georgia, with bassist David Barbe (ex-Mercyland) and drummer Malcolm Travis (ex-Human Sexual Response). The band was named after Mould spotted a sugar packet at a Waffle House in Athens. Sugar signed with Rykodisc in the US and Creation Records in the UK. Debut album Copper Blue (1992) drew enormous critical acclaim from NME, Rolling Stone, and Spin, producing alternative radio hits "Helpless" and "If I Can't Change Your Mind." The companion mini-LP Beaster (1993) — recorded in the same sessions — showcased a more abrasive sound. Second full-length File Under: Easy Listening (1994) received favorable reviews but did not match Copper Blue's impact. Sugar disbanded in early 1995, with rarities compilation Besides released that summer. Thirty years later, the original trio reunited in October 2025 and announced the Love You Even Still 2026 World Tour, with dates in London and New York alongside new music.
