Tower of Power is an R&B/funk band, complete with a horn section, that has been performing since 1968. The band, which has several lead singers, originated in Oakland, California. Lenny Williams, the most famous of the lead singers, fronted the band from 1973-1974 when they had their greatest commercial success. Eight of Tower of Power’s songs have reached the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The group started out being called The Motowns when they first played gigs around Berkeley and Oakland. They renamed themselves in 1970 and released their first album in 1973. The horn section has appeared on numerous other recordings, including those for artists like Elton John, Aerosmith, Paula Abdul, and others. They also have a song, “So Very Hard to Go,” featured on movie soundtracks. It was on the 2002 City of God soundtrack as well as the Semi-Pro soundtrack in 2008.
