Ella Mai is the stage name of Ella Mai Howell, an English R&B singer and songwriter born on November 3, 1994, in London, England, to a Jamaican mother and an Irish father. Her mother, a lover of jazz, named her after Ella Fitzgerald. She moved to New York City at age twelve when her mother took a teaching job there, attending Queens High School of Teaching in Glen Oaks, Queens, before returning to England at age seventeen.
