“If it could speak, it could be a textbook for American musical history.” These are the words of historian Dr. Charles K. Wolfe when describing the Ryman Auditorium, the storied concert Nashville venue that began as a church and went on to become the home of the Grand Ole Opry, the most famous country music showcase of all time. After the Opry moved to a larger venue in 1969 to accommodate larger audiences due to its burgeoning national popularity (brought on by being broadcast on television), the Ryman Auditorium sat empty for 20 years, falling into dilapidation before it was purchased and renovated in the early 1990s. It reopened to immense success, with solo artists and bands from across the musical spectrum being drawn in by its proud history and beautiful performance space. The Ryman Auditorium has remained a popular music venue ever since.
Because the Ryman Auditorium gives music lovers the opportunity to experience great performances in a beautiful historic venue, talented musicians and top bands from across the country and around the world have been attracted to perform there for many years and continue to flock to the venue. Just a few of the top performers scheduled to perform in 2024 are:
・Mar 13 - Jenny Lewis
・Mar 14 - KC & the Sunshine Band
・Apr 2 - The Black Crowes
・Apr 5-6 - Black Pumas
・Apr 16 - Kid Rock’s Comedy Jam (hosted by Kid Rock)
・Apr 20-21 - Shane Gillis (comedy)
・Mar 10-11 - Amy Grant
・May 31-Jun 1 - Jim Gaffigan (comedy)
・Sep 4-6 - The Red Clay Strays w/ Pony Bradshaw and Ben Chapman
Since it was built in 1892, the Ryman Auditorium has hosted an astonishing number of bands and solo artists, from up-and-coming artists to established touring bands. Many different types of music have been played at the venue, with the earlier focus on country music evolving in the 1990s to a more eclectic mix (as well as other entertainment such as comedy, ballet, speeches). Past performers include Harry Houdini, Charlie Chaplin, Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, Earl Scruggs, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers, Garth Brooks, Harry Styles, Ringo Starr, Lizzo, and the Wu-Tang Clan, along with countless others. When it comes to great music, Ryman Auditorium has something for everyone!
