Virginia Coalition is made up of five founding members who met in high school in the 90s. The rock band originated in Alexandria, Virginia, and is often referred to as VACO. They self-released their first album in 1998 and toured Boston and Virginia to support the album. By 2001, they had logged more than 100,000 miles on their tour van. When they released another album in 2003, they found success as it went to number 18 on the Top Internet Album charts from Billboard. They transferred from a band playing the Northeast to a band hitting the entire nation on their tours. Their original lead guitarist and songwriter, Steve Dawson, left the band in 2003. Another founding member, John Patrick, the drummer, left in 2007 but re-joined the group for live concerts in 2011. They have added other members over the years to fill holes in the group.
