Canadian Brass is the name of a quintet (five-piece ensemble) from Canada composed entirely of musicians playing brass instruments. Started in Toronto in 1970 by Charles Daellenbach (tuba), Gene Watts (trombone), and Graeme Page (French horn), along with Stuart Laughton and Bill Phillips on trumpet, Canadian Brass has been an institution in its home country and around the world for 55 years. The members (and even the instruments) have changed over the years, though original founding member Charles Daellenbach is still with the group (the only original member left). Canadian Brass is known for their versatility in playing everything from classical music to jazz music to popular movie themes. The group is also remembered fondly in China as the first musicians from the West permitted to enter the country following Mao’s Cultural Revolution, which they did as part of a cultural exchange in 1977. Based on fan reports from those who have attended recent Canadian Brass concerts, Canadian Brass concerts usually clock in at about 2 hours, though this can obviously vary widely depending on the nature of the event. Please be advised that performance times often vary from show to show, so all times listed on TicketX are approximate.
With the whole history of classical and popular music as their repertoire, Canadian Brass is only limited by their imaginations and the ability of brass instruments to make the requisite sounds. What the group plays very much depends on their current focus or theme, so it is worth checking their website prior to attending a concert. Please be aware that Canadian Brass’s tour setlist may change slightly from concert to concert. The following setlist is taken from Canadian Brass’s concert at Schuster Performing Arts Center in Dayton, Ohio on December 2, 2023, based on data from setlist.fm.
