About Yard Act

Yard Act are a British post-punk and rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, formed in September 2019 by vocalist and lyricist James Smith and bassist Ryan Needham — alumni of Leeds bands Post War Glamour Girls and Menace Beach respectively, who had released a split EP together in 2016. When Needham moved into Smith's spare room in Meanwood the two began recording minimalist rock tracks using a primitive drum machine and borrowed bass guitar, before recruiting guitarist Sam Shipstone and drummer Jay Russell. Their debut single "The Trapper's Pelts" — produced by Bill Ryder Jones of The Coral — arrived in March 2020, followed by the Dark Days EP (2021), which earned early support from Elton John and a TV debut on Later... with Jools Holland. Their debut album The Overload (January 21, 2022, Island Records) debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart, set a record for the fastest-selling debut vinyl album by a band in the 21st century, earned a Mercury Prize nomination, and led The Guardian to call it "an instant classic." Known for Smith's wit-laden spoken-word vocals and biting anti-capitalist satire, the band won the SXSW Developing Non-U.S. Act prize in 2022. Where's My Utopia? (March 1, 2024) peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart. Their third album You're Gonna Need A Little Music, produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen and recorded between Leeds and Los Angeles, is their most recent release.
