Alejandro Escovedo is an American rock musician, songwriter, and singer born Pedro Alejandro Escovedo on January 10, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas — one of twelve children from a deeply musical family. His father, a native of Saltillo, Mexico who emigrated at age twelve, played in mariachi bands; older brothers Pete and Coke were percussionists with Santana and Malo; Pete's daughter Sheila Escovedo became pop star Sheila E.; brother Javier co-founded the Zeros; and brother Mario fronted the Dragons. After growing up in Huntington Beach — where he saw Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and the Flying Burrito Brothers — he moved to San Francisco in 1974 and co-founded The Nuns, one of the city's first punk bands, who opened for the Sex Pistols' final show at Winterland in 1978. Living at the Chelsea Hotel in New York, then settling in Austin in the 1980s, he played in the cowpunk band Rank and File (with Chip and Tony Kinman) and the rootsy True Believers (with Javier and Jon Dee Graham).
