American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is one of the world's great dance companies and America's National Ballet Company, recognized by Congress in 2006. Founded in 1939 by Lucia Chase and Richard Pleasant, ABT gave its first performance on January 11, 1940, and has since built an unparalleled repertoire spanning 19th century classics such as Swan Lake and Giselle alongside groundbreaking works by choreographers including Antony Tudor, Agnes de Mille, Jerome Robbins, and Twyla Tharp. Based in New York City and performing at the Metropolitan Opera House, ABT has toured all 50 states and more than 45 countries. The company is also committed to developing the next generation of dancers through the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, its renowned affiliated training academy.
