Canada National Soccer Team History

For many years, soccer in Canada was little more than a sport you were forced to play for a few months between hockey seasons, but change has come at last to the Great White North. Unbeknownst even to most Canadian soccer fans, a group of talented young players drawn from across Canada’s increasingly diverse population was about to come into their own under inspirational coach John Herdman just as qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup began. What followed was one of the most incredible qualifying runs in CONCACAF history. Not only did Canada qualify for the Qatar World Cup, but they also defeated both M and the US to top the continental qualifying group. It was just the second time Canada had qualified for the World Cup, with the first coming way back at Mexico ‘86, a tournament dominated by Platini and Maradona (including the Hand of God goal), but from which the Canadians returned home without scoring a single goal. The 2022 team faced a tough group with Belgium, Croatia, and a strong Morocco side. They were unlucky to lose to Belgium 1-0 (Canada’s talisman Alphonso Davies missed a penalty), but history was made in the next game when Davies headed in just the second minute against Croatia. Celebrations gripped the nation, but they were to prove short-lived, with Croatia dismantling the Canadians 4-1. Morocco beat Canada 2-1 in the final game and the Canadians went home from their Qatar adventure. The two years since have been somewhat tumultuous for Canada on and off the pitch, with Herdman departing for Toronto FC, but with Canada hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026 along with the US and Mexico, hopes are high that home field advantage could spur the young team on.

Canada National Soccer Team Rivalries

Long considered a bit of a doormat by more powerful CONCACAF soccer nations, Canada surprised everyone in 2021-22, defeating Mexico 2-1 in frigid -8°C/14 °F weather at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium (dubbed the Ice-teca in reference to Mexico City’s own Azteca Stadium) and the US 2-0 at a packed BMO Field in Toronto en route to qualifying for their second-ever World Cup. Canada’s soccer rivalries with Mexico and the US, once more theoretical than real, are well and truly on now!

Are Canada National Soccer Team games exciting?

Going to a Canada National Soccer Team prior to 2010 was often a bit of a lonely affair involving empty bleachers in stadiums where the fans had not been reminded to show up. Things have changed! With Canada’s recent World Cup appearance, the popularity of its three MLS teams, the emergence of a fledgling Canadian Premier League, and the country’s increasingly diverse population, Canada soccer games are now a passionate display of maple leaf flags, bright red tuques (beanies), and singing in both English and French. Get your tickets now from TicketX to watch the Canada National Soccer Team, one of the most exciting young teams around today!
