Known as El Tri (based on the country’s tricolor flag), the Mexico National Soccer Team is by far the most decorated soccer team in the CONCACAF region, with 12 CONCACAF Gold Cups to their name as well as a Summer Olympics gold medal at London 2012 and a FIFA Confederations Cup triumph at home in Mexico in 1999. Mexico has made 17 appearances in the FIFA World Cup (they’re one of those teams that just has to be at a World Cup for it to feel like a World Cup!) and memorably hosted the tournament on two occasions: in 1970, when Pele and his Brazil ran riot to win the great man’s third World Cup in 12 years; and in 1986, when Diego Maradona carried Argentina on his back (or…was it the hand of God…?) all the way to ultimate triumph. Mexico, oddly, have often gone into World Cups looking quite formidable, but they have only ever won a single knockout round match (in 1986), with their repeated failures to do so dubbed la maldicion del quinto Partido (the curse of the fifth game) by superstitious fans. The most painful of these failures came in 2002 at South Korea/Japan when Mexico faced off against their arch-rivals the United States and lost 2-0, presumably followed by several days (or weeks) of national mourning. Along with the US and Canada, Mexico will once again be hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026. What a time that would be for El Tri to break the curse at last.

A Mexican national team fan once said to me, “In Mexico, if you have any money, even a little, you spend it on soccer and beer.” Whether that’s true or not, it is undeniable that Mexico National Soccer Team matches are hugely popular given the levels of national pride on the line. In recent years, some Mexico National Soccer Team matches have been held in the United States due to the high number of Mexican nationals, dual nationals, and Americans of Mexican descent in the country and always sell out. When Mexico plays the US in America, it is not uncommon to see more tricolor flags than stars and stripes. High demand means that tickets to Mexico National Soccer Team games often sell out well in advance. For your best chance at finding the cheapest tickets to upcoming Mexico Soccer matches, search the TicketX listings on this page and use our helpful TicketX seating chart to compare prices and seat locations. While Mexicans may have once looked south to the Spanish-speaking world of South America for rivals, these days it’s all about the noisy neighbor to the north. The rivalry between Mexico and the United States has gone to the next level in the past three decades (since Americans started paying attention to soccer), with battles at all kinds of levels, even once at the 2002 World Cup in the Round of 16. The United States shocked Mexico in that game, beating them 2-0, and has actually managed a record of 18-8-9 against El Tri in the 2000s, a source of great national consternation and frustration to Mexican soccer fans. Canada has also emerged as a new rival since the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers when they defeated Mexico 2-1 in frigid -8°C/14 °F weather at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium (dubbed the Ice-teca in reference to Mexico City’s own Azteca Stadium).
Going to any soccer game featuring the Mexico National Soccer Team will be one of the most memorable moments of your life. Along with all the national colors and El Tri flags, you may see dudes in Mexican wrestler masks, other dudes dressed as Aztec warriors, and others wearing the biggest sombreros you’ve ever seen. It is not unknown for full Mariachi bands to travel to games either. More than just a soccer game, it is a cultural event that shows the country of Mexico’s true passion for the sport, and for having a good time!
