Beset by financial difficulties, the team was purchased by the Mohegan Indian tribe in 2003 (the first Indian tribe in America ever to own a professional sports team), who relocated the franchise to Uncasville, Connecticut. The tribe then renamed the team the Connecticut Sun, building on the existing enthusiasm for women’s basketball based on the success of the UConn Huskies women’s team. The Connecticut Sun have been a consistently solid team throughout their years in Uncasville, qualifying for the WNBA Playoffs in 15 of their 21 seasons since the move to Connecticut.
