The Phoenix Mercury is a professional women’s basketball team that has played in the WNBA ever since the league was founded in 1997. After making the WNBA Finals in their second season (lost 2-1 to the now defunct Houston Comets), the Mercury went into a steep decline, missing the playoffs in 7 out of the next 8 years. Their return to form in 2007 was spectacular, not only finishing atop the Western Conference but making a run back to the WNBA Finals where they defeated the Detroit Shock (now the Dallas Wings) in a dramatic 3-2 series. The franchise would go on to bring home two more WNBA Championships in 2009 and 2014, along with numerous deep playoff runs and a Finals runners-up finish in 2021.
