Kentucky Thunder is the acclaimed bluegrass ensemble that performs with fifteen-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Skaggs — born July 18, 1954, in Cordell, Kentucky. Skaggs played mandolin onstage with Bill Monroe at age six and appeared on television with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs at seven. He turned professional in 1971 when he and Keith Whitley joined Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys, later playing with the Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe's New South, and Emmylou Harris's Hot Band — for whom he wrote the arrangements on her landmark 1980 album Roses in the Snow. Launching a mainstream country solo career in 1981, he achieved 12 number-one hits, eight CMA Awards including Entertainer of the Year (1985), and became the youngest Grand Ole Opry inductee in 1982 — with Chet Atkins crediting him with "single-handedly saving country music." In 1997 Skaggs returned to his bluegrass roots with Bluegrass Rules! on his newly formed Skaggs Family Records label, assembling Kentucky Thunder. Renowned for their driving tempos and clean, fast instrumental technique, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder have won seven Grammy Awards — including five for Best Bluegrass Album — and the IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year eight times. Their 2006 album Instrumentals debuted at number one on the Billboard bluegrass chart. Skaggs was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame (2016) and the Country Music Hall of Fame, IBMA Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, and National Fiddler Hall of Fame (all 2018), and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2021.
