The Kentucky Wildcats gained their scrappy nickname in the early 1900s, after they won a game against the favored Illinois Fighting Illini in 1909 and were said to have fought “like wildcats.” The name stuck and so the Wildcats they remained. For many years, the team’s results were solid if unspectacular, hovering around .500 overall and leading to many mid-conference finishes. In 1950, however, the Wildcats finally broke through, not only winning the Southeastern Conference with a 11-1 record, but also claiming the Sugar Bowl with a 13-7 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. The team followed up this success with a Cotton Bowl victory in the very next year. Following many more years of mediocrity, the Wildcats have emerged somewhat again in recent seasons, winning two Citrus Bowls and a Gator Bowl since 2018.
