The best word to describe the way that opposition fans have viewed the precipitous slide of the long-almighty Manchester United over the past decade is not English but German in origin: schadenfreude. Finding joy in the suffering of others has long been a favorite past time of soccer fans in England (and many other countries), of course, but the extent to which fans of other teams have been able to point and laugh at Manchester United in recent years speaks to the envy that so many felt during their most recent period of dominance from the early 1990s until their last Premier League title in 2013 under talismanic manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Under Fergie, Manchester United won an astounding 13 Premier League titles (including the “first one” in 1992-93), 5 FA Cups, and 2 Champions Leagues (both in incredibly dramatic Finals). This was always going to be a difficult legacy to follow, and indeed many managers and players have come and gone since 2013 (costing many millions of pounds…). Nonetheless, Manchester United are still one of the richest and most popular soccer teams in the world, so opponents should laugh while they may; it seems only a matter of time before this sleeping giant of English soccer wakes again. Manchester United were founded way back in 1878 by the local railway company, not long after the codification of soccer (association football) as a sport, acquiring its current name in 1902. For many years, the team was considered a yo-yo club, bouncing up and down the divisions, but soared to its first period of dominance after the Second World War under Sir Matt Busby. His young team, nicknamed the Busby Babes, won three English titles and became the first English team ever to compete in the European Cup. Tragedy struck in 1958 when a plane carrying the team crashed in Germany, taking the lives of 8 players (23 died in total) and injuring more (including Busby himself). Busby somehow rebuilt the shattered team around flamboyant superstar George Best (sometimes called “the Fifth Beatle”) and led Manchester United to numerous honors, including the 1968 European Cup, where Manchester United became the first English team to win the European Cup. The team’s next big rise would begin in the 1980s under Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who led Manchester United into the Premier League era, where they became its first dominant team, featuring many of the best players ever to play in England and providing moments such as their 2-goal come from behind Champions League Final win again Bayern Munich in 1999 and epic FA Cup semi-final win against Arsenal FC. The years since Ferguson’s retirement (in which they won the Premier League title) have seen Manchester United tail off in the face of increased competition from the likes of Liverpool FC, Manchester City FC, and others, but surely it is only a matter of time before this force of English soccer is back again. Manchester United‘s deepest rivalries are with Liverpool FC, as the teams are the two most decorated in all of English soccer and located just an hour apart by train, and with Leeds United of Yorkshire, a regional enmity that some would argue extends all the way back to the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century! The Premier League era also saw a massive rivalry develop between Manchester United and Arsenal FC as the latter rose to challenge for titles, as evidenced by the many wars of words between Ferguson and Arsenal FC manager Arsene Wenger at that time (mostly via the media). Chelsea FC later rose to battle Manchester United for English and European dominance, followed by Manchester City FC, fellow Mancunians who were long dismissed as nothing but “noisy neighbors” by Ferguson until their meteoric rise in the early 2010s.
