Miami Hurricanes Football

The Miami Hurricanes football team has been representing the University of Miami on the gridiron since 1926. The Hurricanes’ rise from a somewhat obscure team from south Florida to one of the most successful football programs in the nation began somewhat slowly, though they did wake a few people up by winning an Orange Bowl in 1945 and a Gator Bowl in 1951. Things really clicked into gear for the Hurricanes in the 1980s, when they won their first three claimed national championships along with three Orange Bowls and a Sugar Bowl. in 1991, after 50 years of playing as an Independent, the team joined the Big East Conference and promptly won it in their first year as well as a fourth national championship with a 12-0 undefeated season (along with another Orange Bowl. By 2003, the Hurricanes had racked up seven more conference wins and a fifth national title in 2001 off the back of another 12-0 season. After the team moved to the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004, they struggled to dominate as they had in the Big East, frequently finishing between 2nd and 4th in their division, though they managed two divisional titles and another Peach Bowl triumph. Hurricanes fans are a devoted lot, filling the stands of Hard Rock Stadium with the orange colors of their team. Since Hard Rock Stadium, as home to the Miami Dolphins, is actually an NFL stadium, fans and players alike are always extremely excited for Hurricanes home games in such surroundings. The team enters the field through billowing white smoke and a blast from the Touchdown Tommy cannon (which also goes off when the team scores). Along with many players who went on to become NFL stars, the Hurricanes can also boast one alum who became famous for different reasons: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (known first as a professional wrestler, now as a Hollywood actor).

Miami Hurricanes Football Rivalries

The Miami Hurricanes have two big in-state rivalries against the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles, known together as Florida’s Big Three. Unfortunately, the rivalry with the Gators has faded in recent decades due to the teams playing in different conferences. Miami holds a narrow all-time lead in both series, at 29-26 over the Gators and 35-33 over the Seminoles. The Hurricanes’ other main rivals are the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. A matchup in 1988 between the Irish and Hurricanes was dubbed Catholics vs. Convicts (as a number of Miami’s players had run into trouble with the law), and ended in a dramatic 31-30 victory (for the Catholics).

Finding Miami Hurricanes Football Tickets

As one of the most popular college football teams in the nation located in the major city of Miami in the football-mad state of Florida, the Miami Hurricanes are a big draw, especially given that they play at Hard Rock Stadium, the home of the Miami Dolphins. Finding tickets to one of their home games can be tricky, particularly to conference title deciders, Bowl games or matchups involving any of the long-standing rivalries listed above. TicketX is the best place to look for affordable tickets to all the most exciting Miami Hurricanes games.
