Michigan Wolverines Basketball

The Michigan Wolverines basketball team have often been overshadowed, inevitably, by their all-conquering football team, but the Wolverines have actually compiled a pretty impressive record on the hardcourt over the years, both at conference and national level. To date, the Wolverines have not only qualified for 30 NCAA March Madness postseason tournaments, but have appeared in the Final Four on no less than 8 occasions. Of these, the team has had the dubious distinction of finishing runner-up 6 times in the championship final, though they did manage to actually win one in 1989, defeating the Seton Hall Pirates by a score of 80–79 for a dramatic overtime win. After two strong showings in 2020-21 and 2021-22 under head coach (and former Wolverine/NBA player) Juwan Howard, the Wolverines experienced a slight dip in 2022-23, narrowly missing out on March Madness. Their fans will be hoping for a return to national contention in 2024!

Michigan Wolverines Rivalries

The Michigan Wolverines basketball team has three main rivals: the Michigan State Spartans, Duke Blue Devils, and Ohio State Buckeyes. The only rivalry in which the Wolverines possess the all-time lead is against the Spartans, which stands at 97-90, but any Wolverines fan will tell you that really, this is all that matters (given the animosity between the two big Michigan rivals).
