Samara Joy, full name Samara Joy McLendon, is a jazz singer. She received the Best New Artist from Jazz Times after her debut album was released in 2021. Her second album won the Best New Artist Grammy Award in 2023, and she has four other Grammys to her name. Joy grew up in a Bronx, New York City neighborhood with a musical family. Her grandparents founded a gospel group, and her grandfather was a finalist on Sunday Best, a BET Gospel Talent show. Her father toured with Andrae Crouch as a bass player and vocalist. Joy performed in her high school jazz band and won Best Vocalist at the Essentially Ellington festival. She went to college to major in voice, and after winning an international jazz competition, she started working with a producer and manager and recorded her debut album.
