An American band popular for mixing pop, R&B, funk, and soul, the Commodores started music in 1968 at Tuskegee University, Alabama. Though the band now has a different set of talents, it originally had Lionel Richie alongside Thomas McClary, William King, Walter Orange, Ronald LaPread, and Milan Williams as [key] band members.
The group recorded briefly with Atlantic Records. Afterward, precisely in the early 1970s, they tasted success for the first time upon signing with Motown Records. Mind you, Motown is one of the most prominent music labels of the time, founded by none other than Berry Gordy.
This connection opened doors for them to go on tour with the famous The Jackson 5, providing them notable visibility with a broader audience. Their self-titled debut record came out in 1974, and it featured the instrumental smash song "Machine Gun.” With over 500,000 copies sold, it became their first gold record. It was also a regular feature at American sporting events, and it was heard in many films.
This song showed their funk heritage and laid the foundation for their success in the future. They proved their versatility as they continued to compose music by mixing lively funk tunes with calm ballads. They were able to appeal to a wider audience because of this balance.
Their rise to fame came with the hit single "Brick House," a funky hit that became a party anthem and remains a classic. After this achievement, they released a series of hits that showcased their ability to produce energetic funk songs in addition to soulful ballads.
Lionel Richie and Walter Orange alternated as the band's lead singers. Tracks such as "Easy," "Three Times a Lady," and "Sail On" demonstrated Lionel Richie's musical skills and aided the band's rise through the ranks.
Even after Lionel Richie left in 1982 to pursue an active solo career, the commodores proved to be resilient; they kept producing and performing music. The Commodores have won several awards, signifying their influence and achievements in the music industry. One of such notable achievements is winning a Grammy Award.
They won the 1986 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for their popular hit "Nightshift." This song also reached the top of the Billboard R&B charts. In 1995, they were enlisted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, and in 2003, they were enlisted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
The current members of the band are William King, Walter Orange, and J.D Nicholas. The Commodores are not an ordinary group; they are resilient. Just like their popular track "Brick House," the Commodores have established an unbreakable foundation.
