Formerly called The Domingoes, The Spinners are an American Rhythm and Blues vocal group formed when members were high school students in Detroit Ferndale, Michigan, in 1951.
They are also known as Detroit Spinners and the Motown Spinners due to their 1960s recordings with Motown Labels.
Founding members included Billy Henderson, Henry Fambrough, Pervis Jackson, C. P. Spencer, and James Edwards, while Bobby Smith and Philippe Wynne joined later. Current members are C.J. Jefferson, Charlton Washington, Jerson Robert Peck, and Ronnie Moss.
Their rise started with Motown Records in the 1960s, but they recorded minimal success during this period. Despite releasing several singles, they couldn’t gain widespread recognition.
They didn't discover their musical style until they joined Atlantic Records in the early 1970s and started collaborating with producer Thom Bell, a prominent name in the Philadelphia soul scene.
Under Bell's management, The Spinners experienced a major shift. Their self-titled album, "Spinners," released in 1973, included hit singles like "I'll Be Around" and "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," brought them into the limelight.
The band put out great albums and singles in the 1970s, like "Games People Play," "The Rubberband Man," and "One of a Kind (Love Affair)." The partnership with Dionne Warwick on "Then Came You" became a notable global hit, showcasing the band's popularity.
In 1999, The Spinners were enlisted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame and they have also received The Rhythm and Blues Foundation Award, in 1976, they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
