The Roots are an American hip-hop band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 1987 when Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter (MC, vocals) and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson (drums) met as students at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts.
