Petco Park Events

Petco Park first opened its ticket gates in 2004 as the new home of the San Diego Padres after being constructed in central San Diego as part of efforts to revitalize the city’s aging downtown. While the Padres have not always provided the venue with much spark on the field, qualifying for the playoffs just four times since it opened, it seems generally agreed upon that Petco Park has been a big improvement in the gameday experience of Padres fans. The Padres themselves have even managed to turn things up a notch in recent years, pushing through to the NLDS in 2020 and NLCS in 2022. The wait for a World Series goes on, but fans at Petco Park will be perhaps going into 2024 believing that it is not quite the moonshot it once seemed. Despite being built during the boom in retro-style brick stadiums, Petco Park opted instead for an Indian sandstone and stucco exterior along with blue seats inside as a tribute to the celebrated combination of sea and sand that San Diego is known for. The ballpark possesses fantastic views across San Diego Bay as well as the city skyline, including Balboa Park. There is also the unique “Park at the Park” out past the right-center field fence, a knoll where fans can sit on the grass and watch games for just $10 (when no games are on, the park is open to local residents). As well as all regular season and playoff Padres home games, Petco Park is known for hosting large concerts, Comic-Con events, college basketball, and the USA Sevens rugby tournament. Surprisingly, it has also hosted tennis matches, motor sports, and golf events. Talks are in progress for outdoor hockey games and college football bowl games to be held at the stadium. Visitors arriving at Petco Park on an empty stomach will find plenty of tasty snacks to whet their appetites, including many local options such as Grand Ole BBQ y Asado sausages, Barrio dogs, and fresh fish. Local beer is available around the park as well. Those in the market for team or event merchandise can check out the shops and kiosks dotted around the venue.
