Vancouver Canucks

Being a Vancouver Canucks fan over the past five decades has been an exercise in patience at times, punctuated by a few keen surges of excitement leading to bitter disappointment. The Canucks have made it to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals three times (1982, 1994, 2011), but came up short on all three occasions, twice (agonizingly) in Game 7. Following the retirement of the Sedin twins and departure of other stars, the last 10 years have been rough on the Canucks, with the team struggling to get anywhere near the Playoffs, but the traditional white towels were finally waving again in 2024 all around Rogers Arena when the Canucks, who had topped their division in the regular season, not only qualified for their first proper postseason in a nearly a decade, but also dispatched the Nashville Predators in six games in the First Round. Tragedy (another tradition in Vancouver…) was to follow in the next round, however, as an all-Canadian matchup with the Edmonton Oilers saw the Canucks fall 3-2 in Game 7 in front of their home fans. Can the Canucks come back stronger in 2024-25 and finally break the 52-year curse to win their first Stanley Cup? Get your Vancouver Canucks tickets from TicketX and be there to cheer them on!

  • While the Canucks were the first Vancouver NHL team, they were not the first professional hockey team in the city. The Vancouver Millionaires played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association from 1911-1926, even winning the Stanley Cup in 1915, the first-ever West Coast team to do so!

Rival Teams

Nothing gets NHL hockey fans all revved up like their team facing off against a major rival. Here are two of the Vancouver Canucks’ most significant rivalries.

Vancouver Canucks vs Calgary Flames

The Vancouver Canucks of British Columbia have a long-standing rivalry with the Calgary Flames from the neighboring province of Alberta. The two teams have met seven times in the NHL Playoffs, playing a league record three Game Sevens that were decided in overtime. Canucks fans will never forget Pavel Bure’s double overtime breakaway goal in 1994, which sent them on their way towards their second (unsuccessful) Stanley Cup Finals run. It still rankles, though, that the Flames have the one thing that the Canucks want the most: a Stanley Cup victory (in 1989). The Canucks and Flames are set to meet 4 times during the 2024-25 NHL season with 2 games in Vancouver and 2 games in Calgary.

Vancouver Canucks vs Boston Bruins

The rivalry between the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins may have only really fired up for a brief time, but boy-oh-boy did it burn hot while it did. There had been no particular animosity between the two teams prior to their meeting in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, unsurprising given that they inhabit different conferences and so do not play on another all that often. But in that seven game series, all hell broke loose. Finger biting incidents, bone-crunching hits, chirping at each other in the media—it got ugly. It has been 14 years, but Canucks fans have never forgotten, and still get hot under the collar when they hear the name Brad Marchand (who still plays for the Bruins to this day!). The Canucks and Bruins are set to meet twice in the 2024-2025 regular season, with one game in Vancouver and one in Boston. Heaven help us if they meet after that in the Finals!

When do the 2024-25 NHL Season and Preseason start for the Vancouver Canucks?

The first puck of the NHL preseason generally drops in late September, with the schedule of preseason and regular season games usually released some time in early August. Like all NHL teams, the Vancouver Canucks will play 6-8 preseason games at various locations to prepare for the upcoming 2024-25 NBA regular season. Fans should note that some preseason games take place in non-NHL North American markets or even overseas in other countries. The NHL regular season starts in early October and runs until early April, followed by the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Why should you buy tickets to Vancouver Canucks preseason games?

Although preseason games do not contribute to any team’s total points in the NHL regular season, you shouldn’t completely write them off! Not only are tickets to preseason games much cheaper, but they also allow fans the earliest sneak peek at the exciting new draft picks and other young players who might bolster the Vancouver Canucks lineup in the upcoming season. And with tickets at cheaper prices from TicketX, premium seats are also much more affordable, so you can get right up close to the board crunching action on the ice!

2024-25 NHL Season Predictions

Which Teams Will Go To the 2024-25 NHL Playoffs?

The 2023-24 NHL season isn’t even over yet. The Florida Panthers and New York Rangers will meet in the Eastern Conference Finals, and the Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers will face off in the Western Conference Finals to determine who will win the 2024 Stanley Cup.

So, tabbing the 16 teams to make the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs may seem like a bit of a stretch, but like the NFL, NBA, and MLB, we can expect most of the usual suspects to still skate in the Postseason.

This year, the Panthers, Rangers, Bruins, Maple Leafs, Hurricanes, Lightning, Capitals, and Islanders made it from the Eastern Conference, with the Stars, Oilers, Avalanche, Canucks, Golden Knights, Predators, Kings, and Jets all qualifying from the Western Conference.

Who could make it next season, and who might not be in the final 16 teams on the ice? The Red Wings and Penguins both just missed out in the East, so any regression by the Capitals and/or Islanders may mean those two may qualify in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots. In the West, it seems the same eight will end up in the Playoffs, just in a different order.

Which Two Teams Will Go To the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals and Why?

There always seem to be two new teams meeting in the Stanley Cup Finals, and the NHL has arguably the hardest Postseason to navigate, with all four rounds of play both mentally and physically excruciating. Over the past five seasons, the Bruins (240 wins), Avalanche (238), Hurricanes (232), and Maple Leafs (221) are among the win leaders, but none of those four teams are still alive in the 2023-24 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Panthers (224 wins) made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals last season and are in the ECF again this season, so to see Florida skating in the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals would surprise nobody. But expect the mad Bruins, hungry Maple Leafs, disappointed Hurricanes, and the Panthers rivals, the Lightning, to all have something to say about it.

The steady progress the Stars have shown and their ability to eliminate the defending Stanley Cup champions VGK and the mighty Avalanche, shows that this team has arrived, and until the Oilers prove they can play better defense and have a reliable Goalie, Jake Oettinger, and Dallas may be the new team to beat in the competitive Western Conference.

A Panthers-Stars Stanley Cup may be on the menu here in 2024, as well as a year and a month from now in the Summer of 2025.

2024-25 NHL Stanley Cup Prediction: Stars over Panthers, 4-3

Trade Rumors and Draft Picks

After the rush of excitement at their first postseason appearance in nearly a decade (followed by the inevitable disappointment in the next round), the Vancouver Canucks will be looking to build on their success with free agents, new talent from the draft, or trades with other franchises. However, as the Canucks have already traded the right to their 1st and 2nd picks this year, the Canucks will have to strike it lucky if they are to find a franchise-altering player in the later rounds. Acquiring some veteran talent through trades could also be a way for the Canucks to get better, with possible trade targets including Jake Guentzel (Carolina Hurricanes) and Tyler Toffoli (Winnipeg Jets).

Get onto TicketX and buy your tickets for events at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC, Canada today!
