Rogers Arena History

Devoted fans tend to bemoan the passing of any cherished stadium or arena that has long been home to their favorite sports team (all those special times and memories, even the smell sometimes). But it is hard to believe that fans in Vancouver would have shed too many tears in 1995 when their Vancouver Canucks traded the cramped confines of the Pacific Coliseum (where it was only too common to discover that one had a seat with an “obstructed view”) for the sleek new Rogers Arena (called GM Place at the time). Canucks fans are a long-suffering bunch, having seen their team through some tough times (and dodgy all-yellow uniforms) in the years after they joined the NHL as an expansion team in 1970. However, the team was riding a surge of success (or near-success) when they moved to Rogers Arena, having taken the New York Rangers all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994 before crashing to a heartbreaking defeat. The Canucks got their fans’ hopes up again in 2011 when they once more reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals (against the Boston Bruins) and once more, inevitably, choked. After years of struggling, hopes are high again in the 2023-24 season with the Canucks on top of the league (though not among older fans, who remember…).

The many kiosks and shops scattered around the arena hawk all manner of team and event merchandise, including jerseys from the Canucks’ periods of questionable fashion choices.
