Home Teams: Real Salt Lake (MLS)
America First Field was built in 2008 in Sandy, Utah (15 minutes drive from Salt Lake City) to provide a new stadium for the state’s MLS club Real Salt Lake, which played its first few seasons at Rice Eccles Stadium. Moving from a college football stadium to a state of the art soccer-specific stadium gave the Real Salt Lake franchise a huge boost in terms of forming a team identity and dedicated core of supporters. Results on the field came immediately after the move as well, with Real Salt Lake reaching the semifinals of the 2008 MLS Playoffs in their first ever postseason appearance and then going two steps further in 2009 by not only making it all the way to the MLS Cup Final but also winning 5-4 on penalties over David Beckham and the LA Galaxy after 120 minutes had left the teams deadlocked at 1-1. Real Salt Lake’s fortunes have remained relatively strong in the years since, making it to one more MLS Cup Final in 2013 (losing on penalties 7-6 to Sporting Kansas City) and 2 more playoff semifinals, and participating 3 times in the CONCACAF Champions League. The team’s fans are loyal and loud, with supporter groups including the Salt City United, Rogue Cavaliers Brigade, Section 26, Riot Brigade, Los Caballeros Reales, and La Barra (all known collectively as The Riot) and show up to support their team rain or shine (or, as in one recent crazy game against Los Angeles FC, snow!). Hungry visitors at America First Field will find no shortage of tasty snacks, with everything from hot sandwiches with house-made kettle chips to the Hooligan Fry Bowl and local Roonie’s Ice Cream on the menu, as well as the Burger of the Match, which changes based on the local cuisine of the opponent (cool idea!). Plenty of cold beer or hot coffee (for those snowy days) is also available. For Real Salt Lake merchandise, head to one of the venue’s many shops and kiosks.
As well as Real Salt Lake soccer games, America First Field is known for hosting international soccer games, often featuring the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. The venue has also hosted World Cup Qualifiers and was one of the venues for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Concerts by international stars have long attracted large crowds to America First Field, with past performers including Paul McCartney, The Eagles, KISS, Journey, and Neil Diamond, among many others.
