Part of a larger complex on the Temple University campus in Philadelphia, the Liacouras Center was originally conceived of in the 1980s by basketball head coach John Chaney, who wished to elevate the profile of Temple’s basketball program. As per Chaney’s vision, the completion of the Liacouras Center in 1997, with its capacity of over 10,000, allowed the university to attract higher profile opponents and thus improve competition and exposure for both the men’s and women’s Temple Owls basketball teams. The Owls men’s basketball team has long punched above its weight at both conference and national levels, qualifying for the  NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournament on 33 occasions, making 7 appearances in the Sweet 16 and (oddly) 8 appearances in the Elite 8 (a mathematical oddity due to different tournament structures in past tournaments). The team has even appeared twice in the Final Four, albeit prior to 1960. Owls fans are a passionate bunch, led by the Cherry Crusade fans section, who occupy the front rows in games clad in cherry red and white. Hungry visitors will find plenty of tasty treats at the concessions, such as crab fries, buffalo wings, and (of course) Philly cheesesteaks, along with plenty of good craft beer.
