BC Place History

When BC Place Stadium opened in 1983, it possessed the world’s largest air-supported dome in the world, a fact that soon made the white pillowy roof of the stadium an iconic part of downtown Vancouver’s gorgeous skyline. Crowds flocked to BC Place Stadium immediately, with over 50,000 at the first BC Lions CFL football game played at the venue and over 60,000 to see the Vancouver Whitecaps, then of the doomed NASL (North American Soccer League). Years later, after the Whitecaps had been reborn in the city and joined the MLS (Major League Soccer) in 2011, BC Place Stadium was given a much-needed makeover in the shape of a major renovation that transformed the building’s roof into a retractable cable roof (essential in such a rainy city) and replaced the old carpet-like Astroturf with softer modern artificial turf (which is set to be replaced with real grass in time for 2026!). Since their long-awaited return to BC Place Stadium, the Whitecaps have not exactly set the MLS alight but have recorded three Canadian Championship victories, including back to back triumphs in 2022, and have appeared in the MLS Playoffs on 6 occasions and the CONCACAF Champions League 3 times. Nonetheless, the team is supported by loyal legions of white and blue clad fans including the Vancouver Southsiders, Curva Collective, and the Rain City Brigade.
