The Wellmont Theater is located on Seymour Street in the city of Montclair, New Jersey. The theater was named after its first manager, Wellenbrink, and the city, Montclair.

When it was first opened, its primary purpose was to host live entertainment shows such as stage plays and vaudeville shows. However, in 1929, when it acquired a new sound and audio system, it became a cinema, showing motion pictures and movies.

In the 1980s, the Roberts Theater chain made structural adjustments to the theater. The theater was transformed into a triplex. It was during this period that the theater started to play independent films.

The theater was closed in 2006 after it was sold by the Roberts Theater chain to new owners. It underwent extensive renovations with an improved sound system and new lighting equipment. It reopened in 2008, returning its single screen and stage setup. Its first show back was headlined by American pop-rock band, Hanson. The band is responsible for the worldwide hit MMMBop.

In 2013, the theater was transferred to new owners. With this new ownership came additional repairs and renovations to the theater. There was an expansion of the food and beverage unit along with an installation of stellar audiovisual equipment, hence boosting the experience of concertgoers. Finally, in 2015, the theater had another reopening. It has since hosted world-class artists like Ms Lauryn Hill, DNCE, and Tom Jones. The theater is now renowned as the perfect venue for arts and culture events in New Jersey.

WELLMONT THEATER PAST EVENTS

The Wellmont is the permanent home to the Montclair Film Festival. Founded in 2012, the Festival takes place annually and celebrates and spotlights productions and works by both American and International filmmakers. All film submissions are divided into specific categories. These categories include; short films, world cinema, student filmmaking, fiction, and non-fiction.

On the 7th of February, 2024, rock band, DNCE performed an electrifying set live at the Wellmont Theater. Joe Jonas, the lead singer of the band, had the support of his brothers, Nick and Kevin Jonas, who were in attendance for the show in their hometown. Whiskey Myers, another band, performed at the theater during their Is A Comin Tour on the 19th of February, 2022.

The stage at the Wellmont Theater was also graced by music legend Lauryn Hill on Valentine’s Day in 2020. The singer stunned and dazzled the audience by performing all the songs off her Grammy-winning album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Genre-defying rapper and singer Rod Wave also visited the city of Montclair on his Soulfly Tour. On October 5, 2021, the musician performed hits at the Wellmont Theater, such as Green Light, Heart on Ice, Rags2Riches, and Girl of My Dreams. In June 2022, the Fab Faux performed songs from the era of the Beatles at the theater. Atlantan rapper Gunna held a concert at the theater on the New Jersey leg of his Drip or Drown Tour 2 Tour in April, 2019. The year before, Playboy Carti had performed on November 30, 2018 on his North American Tour at the Wellmont Theater.
