Though they have only ever won a single NBA championship (way back in 1958, hundreds of miles from their current home, when they were still the St. Louis Hawks) the Atlanta Hawks have been quite good at making the playoffs, appearing in the postseason 49 times over the course of their 75-year history. The Hawks relocated to Atlanta in 1969 and quickly established themselves as a solid if unspectacular team. Their acquisition of Dominique “The Human Highlight Reel” Wilkins in 1982 spurred one of the Hawks’ best stretches as a franchise in the 1980s and 1990s where they featured yearly in the playoffs. However, the Hawks were often swept by their opponents and never got further than the Eastern Conference Semifinals even with the defensive talents of Dikembe Mutombo after the dominant center joined them in 1996. As the turn of the millennium passed, the Hawks spun into a downward spiral, missing the playoffs in eight successive seasons between 1999 and 2007. The arrival of coach Mike Budenholzer in 2013 seemed to give the team new wings, inspiring them in 2015 to break through at last into the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since they had moved to Atlanta. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they were swept in four by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The team repeated the feat in 2021, when they lost 4-2 in the Conference Finals to the eventual champions, the Milwaukee Bucks. Heading into 2023-24, coming off a First Round loss to the Celtics last season, Atlanta Hawks fans will be looking to star point guard Trae Young, shooting guard Dejounte Murray and small forward D’Andre Hunter to send their team to new heights this season.

Atlanta Hawks basketball games at State Farm Arena are high octane affairs, combining top notch on court action with plenty of entertainment in between. Families have reported that State Farm Arena is one of the more family friendly venues in the NBA, but this by no means implies that the place doesn’t get rockin’ when the Hawks are about to take down a big team in front of the home crowd. All in all, going to see a Hawks game at any point in the season is an experience that you will not soon forget!
The Atlanta Hawks developed a heated rivalry in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the Orlando Magic based largely on three particularly three intense playoff meetings between the two teams in 1996, 2010, and 2011. The Magic, powered by a young Shaquille O’Neal and sharpshooter Penny Hardaway, defeated the Hawks in 1996 in five games and the 2010 Magic swept the Hawks in the conference semifinals in four straight. The Hawks found redemption at last the very next year, in 2011, when a team led by Joe Johnson and Al Horford doused the Magic in six games in the First Round.
The Hawks’ main rival historically has long been the Boston Celtics, whom they first encountered in 1949 after joining the NBA in its very first season (as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks). During their stints in St. Louis, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, the Hawks have encountered the Celtics a total of 11 times in the Playoffs, including four times in the NBA Finals. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Celtics won all but two of these encounters, though the Hawks did at least muster one of those two victories in the NBA Finals (albeit way back in 1958 when they were located in St. Louis).
