Lamp is an indie pop band from Japan that formed in 2000. The band is made up of vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Yusuke Nagai and Kaori Sakakibara, and guitarist Taiyo Someya. The trio started co-writing songs together due to their shared interest in 60s British and American music. They put together a demo tape, then played their first show in a small Japanese bar in 2001. They got a record deal the next year and released their first album in 2003. Though they released several albums that decade, they were only popular in Asia since they performed around that region. However, in 2021, their song “Half Asleep” went viral on TikTok videos, and their popularity spread across the world. The group is highly influenced by café music and city pop, but critics have a hard time placing them into one genre.
