Nekrogoblikon are an American melodic death metal band formed in 2006 in Palo Alto, California by Nicky Calonne and Tim Lyakhovetskiy — the self-proclaimed "Best Goblin Metal Band on the Planet" and one of heavy metal's most beloved and absurdist acts. The two founders recorded their debut album Goblin Island in Lyakhovetskiy's basement during the summer and early fall of 2006, self-releasing it on January 1, 2007, and establishing a goblin-themed universe that would define the band's identity. On his return to the University of California, Santa Barbara, Calonne expanded the lineup and the band developed into a full ensemble based in Los Angeles. Drawing influences from GWAR, Finntroll, and Dethklok, their music deploys gnarly death metal riffs, claw-pumping choruses, lightning-fast guitar work, and over-the-top EDM-style keyboard flourishes — all filtered through an affable, self-referential sense of humor. The more technically accomplished Stench (2011) included the single "No One Survives," whose viral music video — directed by Brandon Dermer — landed the band festival slots at Download Festival in the UK and Rock Im Park/Rock Am Ring in Germany. The Power EP (2013) received a rare 5/5 from Kerrang!, which included a John Goblikon poster in the August 2013 issue. In 2014 the band joined Limp Bizkit on the Kerrang! Tour; Heavy Meta (2015, Mystery Box) and Welcome to Bonkers (2018) followed, the latter supporting a run that included the entire final cross-country Vans Warped Tour and Summer Slaughter. In between tours, the band and writer/actor Dave Rispoli released three seasons of Right Now, a comedic talk show starring goblin mascot John Goblikon. The Fundamental Slimes and Humours (April 1, 2022) continued their catalog, and as of 2023 Dickie Allen of Infant Annihilator joined as harsh vocalist alongside John Goblikon's transition to co-lead vocalist. Lead guitarist Alex Alereza remains the longest-serving active member.
