Rihanna

From the small island of Barbados to Los Angeles, the music capital of the world, Rihanna is one of the world’s most successful musicians. At fifteen, she got her early start when she was invited to the United States by Evan Rogers, a record producer who discovered her while on vacation in Barbados. Her debut album was released two years later, in August 2005, with her first single, Pon De Replay. The track was a hit, leading Rihanna on a path to global pop domination. By expressing her authentic self in her music, Rihanna has crafted the soundtrack of the 21st century. With her genre choices, bold album covers, her unique vocal delivery, inspired by her Caribbean heritage, and captivating and alluring live performances, she has cultivated a brand as one of the most ground-breaking artists of this generation. This has delivered to her a trophy cabinet filled with awards and accolades. The singer is a nine-time Grammy Award winner. In 2016, she was celebrated with the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. She has also received 8 People’s Choice Awards, 13 American Music Awards; including the 2013 Icon Award, 12 Billboard Music Awards among numerous others.

Rihanna’s New Album, “R9”

After releasing seven albums since her debut, Rihanna released the critically acclaimed album, Anti. The album was embraced for its innovative retelling of Rihanna’s persona. However, when the world needed her the most, she vanished. In recent years, Rihanna’s legacy as a hitmaker, although not forgotten, has been eclipsed by her new titles as a business and fashion mogul, and most recently as a mother of two sons.

Since the commercial success of Anti, Rihanna has yet to release a new solo music project. However, regardless of her eight year disappearance from music, Rihanna still dominates as the second-best selling female music artist. It is therefore no surprise that the Navy, her fans have all but demanded a new album from the musician. This anticipated project, dubbed R9, when released would be her ninth studio album.

The hype for R9 gained momentum in June 2018, with Rihanna as a guest on the Graham Norton Show. According to the Independent, the singer responded that she was in “the studio at the moment” to a question about her next album. Since then, she has played a fun game of tag with the media and her fans in general, keeping them in speculation about the release date of her ninth album. However, certain people share the opinion that Rihanna has entered some form of indirect retirement from music. Billboard opines that the musician has no plans to release a new album based on her new focus on her entrepreneurial ventures.

The voices of the naysayers can be drowned out with the repeated statements from Rihanna herself about her next music project. The singer has shared that her next album will be reggae-inspired as she told Vogue, staying true to her island girl roots. In February 2023, she headlined the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show and most recently performed at a wedding in India, showing no signs of leaving the music industry anytime soon.

Balancing motherhood with being a fashion and beauty mogul as fans clamor for a fresh music project can’t be easy. However, when Rihanna finally releases R9, trust that it is going to blow all her previous projects out of the park. If the charts for her most recent release, the Oscar-nominated soundtrack for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Lift Me Up are anything to go by, Rihanna’s comeback can be expected to top some of her best-selling singles. These singles include her collaboration with Drake, Work and Umbrella, featuring Jay-Z. In the meantime, Rihanna continues to tease the new project, telling Extratv that “it is going to be amazing ... an evolution of the time spent away.”.
