Sunderland A.F.C. is a professional soccer club based in Sunderland. The club was founded in 1879 and has a long history in English football. Sunderland currently competes in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English soccer. The team has won six English league titles, with most of its success coming in the early 20th century. One of the club’s most famous achievements was winning the FA Cup in 1973, when they defeated the heavily favored Leeds United F.C. 1–0 in the final. Sunderland plays its home matches at the Stadium of Light, a large stadium that opened in 1997 and holds nearly 49,000 fans. The club is known for its passionate supporters and strong regional rivalry with Newcastle United F.C. in the Tyne–Wear derby. Sunderland remains an important and historic club in English football.
