The Steel Wheels are an American Americana and folk-rock band based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The band was formed in 2005 by former Eastern Mennonite University students Trent Wagler, Eric Brubaker, Jay Lapp, and Brian Dickel in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Originally a traditional string band performing original folk material around a single microphone and drawing from the mountain music and string band traditions of the Shenandoah Valley, The Steel Wheels have since evolved their sound to encompass elements of bluegrass, gospel, blues, rock, and pop. Kevin Garcia joined the band on drums and percussion in 2017, and Jeremy Darrow later replaced Brian Dickel on bass. The current lineup consists of Trent Wagler, Eric Brubaker, Jay Lapp, Kevin Garcia, and Jeremy Darrow. The band is known for their exceptional four-part harmonies, Wagler's distinctive tenor voice, and Brubaker's expressive fiddle work. Since 2013, The Steel Wheels have hosted the Red Wing Roots Music Festival, an annual summer event held at Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia, which has become a beloved fixture of the Shenandoah Valley. Their most recent release is a self-titled album from 2025, released on their own Big Ring Records imprint.
